Do YOU have a present for me?
On Saturday, November 10th, Walker Harris added another year to his age, tuning 6 years old!! It was definitely a weird day. He expected a
party, friends and lots of presents!! Goodness gracious...unfortunately Walker is still trying to understand the concept of "Better to give than receive"...He asked everyone...do you have a present for me? How 'bout you!! I have to say it was a tad disconcerting considering we go through this every year and have the same conversation about not being greedy and learn to be content and how it is impolite to ask people for gifts...I believe the reasoning on this matter is in vain at this point, one day it'll kick in I'm sure and it doesn't mean I'll stop giving him insight into the idea of getting gifts...!! Anyway, none of the things he expected happened.
Instead of gifts he got a doughnut and was hold up in the car at the new church building due to the rule of no kids allowed during landscaping!! He and the other kids just new they would be able to get in there and help out or ride with Daddy on the Bobcat...Oh NO!!!
That was the first disappointment of the day and very early too, say 7:00 am!! Well, the day continued to going to choir practice at church for the Christmas Musical!! He was offered a chance to sing with the big kids but decided he'd hang out with Miss Peggy, Gavin & Seth instead!!! He had no idea but
Mama was planning cupcakes for all
the kids during snack. This was of course a ploy to help him feel like his friends were celebrating with him. He enjoyed it of course
but else do you think he expected...Presents....No no Walker no presents just friends and cupcakes!!! He was a little OK with that. Going back to the church building for some grub, he had to eat in the car and again not fun!! After that we went around to catch the men working, planting shrubs & trees and using the power tools. The most fascinating for the boys and especially Walker was watching
Mr. Humber on the four wheeler all morning, man he wanted a piece of that ride so bad!!! Of course the rules state..."NO KIDS ALLOWED". So that was a no go!! We decided to just get away for the afternoon to keep us away from the sight so the work of the day could be completed. Walker made a call to
MaMaw and what do you think he said first...that's right, "Hey MaMaw, it's my birthday...do you have a present? Oh my gosh I didn't know what to say..but "WALKER!" It didn't faze him a bit. We asked to go to Franklinton to visit her and you will never believe what she said: Sure come on out...The Cornelius Boys are here with their four wheeler, the boys can ride too!!!
Oh my goodness!!! Isn't God good to us even when we don't deserve it. "But God demonstrates his own love for man in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 Walker WILL eventually be able to put away his selfish desires. He is still a child and its normal for them to feel and act this way at this age; however it isn't acceptable and that is why we will continue to guide and train him and all my kids rightly in what's appropriate and pleasing to God. We all have issues though, even us adults. Fortunately, we most of the time can see it before it gets too bad and exercise some self-control. We must always remember God loves us and he does want good things for us...when sometimes we don't even deserve it!! So to conclude the evening...pizza and "Spider-Man 3"...can I keep it, Walker ask? Yes this is your PRESENT!!! Enjoy!! And he did--over and over and over and over...
HAPPY 6th BIRTHDAY, WALKER!
